How fun is it to discover new calves! We have eight mama cows this year. Our fifth calf has been born. He is only two days old.
We name the girls and keep them for our small herd. They are the future moms. I like to name them after missionaries. We have a Corrie Ten-boom. This month’s heifers are Lottie moon and Elizabeth Elliott. Lottie is white as the full moon. We’ll call Elizabeth Liz for short. We don’t name the males -the little bulls – because they’ll be steers and be sold or eaten.
The new barn is finished and the pecan freezers are installed and running. We have three new kittens to keep down on mice. We haven’t named them yet. Our farm dogs are Lola, Cowboy and Hank.
There are only two months until our grandson will arrive. We don’t know his name yet. It’s going to be a surprise. He’ll make our twenty-seventh grandchild and of course we are excited. I suggested the name Axel or Angus. We’ll see!
Three more pretty little black calves are coming. Ron checks twice a day. If we get another heifer and we may use the name Mary Slessor or Gladys Alyward. What names would you choose?
The hummingbirds come less often to the feeder. Summer – still hot is slipping away day by day and soon will change into autumn. The sycamore, oaks, and mulberries will lose their leaves. The pecan hulls will split and we will harvest bushels and bushels of shiny brown nuts. Grab a sweater and come along.
New calves are really a fun part of putting up with stock animal antics!
