The animals on a farm are a joy and a delight. Caring for them is one of the greatest jobs that God has given to mankind.

My favorite of all the pets and animals at Crazy Creek Ranch is this sweet dog, Shelly. She is gentle and lovable and at the same time a great guard dog. She follows her owner around and watches over her as she works and lays at her feet whenever she stops to rest. She obeys all commands and as you might say, she sleeps with one eye open.Rabbits are a new addition at my daughter’s farm. Brenna built them a nice cage with plenty of room to run. Soon she had two batches of cuddly furry baby bunnies. They are a shiny reddish brown and black and exceptionally soft. These rabbits will be meat rabbits. They will provide a nutritious and delicious meat for the freezer.
The ranch has horses which Brenna trains and sells. She is very talented at caring for and training her horses. Several pretty colts joined the farm this spring. I think this little white one is a filly.
Some are nosey and spoiled to a scratch or back rub. They are well cared for and a joy to watch. Did you know that horses sleep standing up resting one leg at a time? Many of the horses Brenna trains go to ranches and farms where they are ridden to check fences and tend cattle. They are trained but never “broken.”The piglets are adorable. They come in various colors: white and pink with black spots, brown with light spots and tan with black spots. Instead of curly tails they have straight tails. They run and play and nurse on their mama hog. These pigs are a special breed that graze instead of rooting. They run and play in their fenced yard making little squealing sounds. This year’s batch of spring starter chicks are growing fast in a water trough. They are a new breed we are trying that is half Rhode Island Red. When they are about eight weeks old half of them will move to our Holliswood Farm and take up residence in our chicken tractor. The tractor is moved regularly so the chickens have fresh grass and bugs to eat every day. Being pasture-raised they’ll lay brown eggs. Chickens take a bit of work. They have to have access to water and be fed well and protected from predators. They are fun to watch and it is a pleasure to harvest their eggs from the nesting boxes.
How many cows are found on the Ranch? About ninety! Calves join the ranks every year. Each weighs thirty-five to fifty pounds. They run and play in the pasture never straying far from their walking milk supply. The calves are mostly white-faced Herefords. Three sturdy bulls guard the cows and young steers.
God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1: 25
What a joy-filled post with all the pictures and descriptions of the animals! Made me homesick for the farm.
