Animals on the Farm

What a blessing to have pets, livestock and wild things on the farm.

This horse comes to the fence to be stroked and scratched and maybe to get an apple treat from a grandchild. We love to see him waiting there in the afternoon sun. One of the prettiest and most majestic animals we love the sight of them running across the pasture. Look at those amazing eyes. The eyes are like fingerprints. They positively identify the horse from all others. Isn’t that awesome?

The chicken are out for an afternoon stroll and have a bug snack or two before they head into the coop to tend their eggs and rest a while. When darkness falls they’ll move to their loft and roost for the night.

The kittens spend most of their time in the garage on feed sacks. They romp and play together all day and nap on their mama cat. In a few short weeks they’ll be going to new homes or joining the grown cats in the barn.

This new born calf is up and folowing his mama cow as she grazes in the sunny pasture. She’s a bit scraggly looking but the sun and lots of good milk will sleek her up in no time. Soon she’ll be running and butting heads with the other calves.

Cowboy is our favorite dog . He is needy. He needs attention, a scratch, and some petting. When Ron sits on the porch swing Cowboy comes and lays his head in his lap. He can’t resist a scratch and some words in a friendly voice.

Here is one of our pretty barn cats. She and the others have kept the field mice in check. The children all love the cats and are excited when we have a litter of kittens.

This little gray calf is happy feasting on clover in the pasture. Fresh grass delights him. He spends every day eating and growing and in a year will be big enough to go to market. In the mean time we will love watching him grow.

We love all the creatures on the farm: the racoons, possoms, deer, otters, beavers, armadillos and birds. A hawk wheeling in the sky, eagles we see sometimes, hummingbirds and songbirds at the feeders and the herons wading in the pond.

God blessed them and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:28 NASB
