Too Long

He lay too long
Lazing in summer sun
Watching children
Play at the water’s edge
In the warm sand.
He lay too long
Legs crossed
Reading a book
Under a shade tree
Too long sipping lemonade
Boaters left the lake
He lay too long
Beach chairs were put away
Leaves fell, grasses browned
Sand and water grew cold
He lay too long
He’s long gone.
