Winter and Amaryllis

A Merry heart does good like medicine.

The snow fell softly and laid down a thin white carpet. It piled up atop fence posts and bird feeders, tree branches, and the backs of the cows and horses.

They came for Christmas–a gift from Mr. Hollis– dreary kittle pots of dark soil. Each pot with a small bulb and a tiny green point. I added water as instructed and set them in a windowsill to get some sunshine.

The first days the tip grew and these were the leaves. They grew quickly into long green spears. After a week or so the bud raised and grew into a fat pointed bud atop the flower stem. It shot up to my amazement to be two feet tall. Slowly the bud opened to reveal four buds. Over the next week the buds swelled and began to open with red, white and pink blooms. We had some very cold wintry days stuck inside except for trips out to feed the cows and get the mail.

The world was frosty cold outside but warm by the woodstove inside. The wind blew and the snow fell and the flowers bloomed like it was spring.

The winter cold passed and we have had sunshine to melt the snow and warm things up again. The animals are so much easier to tend in the normal weather. Soon the spring will arrive and flowers will grow and bloom outside. The seasons all bring us beauty and teach us to work and care for the land and for our pets and livestock.

Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or have you seen the storehouses of the hail?
