Visit to Guthrie

Ron and I had a nice few days in Guthrie this July. It was very hot and dusty with temps in the hundreds. We stayed cool visiting the Territorial Museum as well as many historical buildings downtown. We went into the Carnegie Library and bought some old time-y goodies at the Licorice Man candy store. We ate at Stables Cafe, which had once been a livery in the busy town bygone days and Gages steakhouse, situated in the old train depot. We had a breakfast at Katie’s Diner. We stayed a night at the Hampton Inn and went swimming and also at one of the many Bed and Breakfasts in the town.

And I do love the summer flowers!

Guthrie was the first state capitol of Oklahoma. It was not named for Woody Guthrie, the singer. Nor was Woody Guthrie named for the town although he hailed from Okemah, Oklahoma. He was named for Woodrow Wilson, who was elected President of USA the year Woody was born –1912. The town was named for a Kansas jurist John Guthrie before the capitol was moved to Oklahoma City.
